Summary:
I showed up on time for my annual state inspection. The service person came out and checked me in very quickly. Approx. 1 hour later I was informed that my vehicle was ready and the technician went over all the findings. He also showed me that their multi point vehicle checklist revealed everything was also correct, He also pointed out that the tires were getting close to the wear out point. These tires are rated at 50,000 miles, and I have less than 28,000 miles on them, mostly interstate highway travel. There may be another 10,000 miles on them, but this would still be a lot less that the "advertised" milage. When I left the dealer and was proceeding home I noticed a foul smell in my vehicle. It was an oily smell and I thought I might have picked up some diesel exhaust on the road. After arriving home my wife took the vehicle to doo some shopping. She called me to inform me that the whole vehicle was full of a foul oily smell and that she had to open all 4 windows in 35 degree rainy weather. The odor gave her a severe headache. Upon arriving home I checked the vehicle for any defects. When I went to open the hood I could not push the under hood latch. Something was blocking the lever. After several attempts I managed to unlatch the hood, and open it. The blockage was caused by the oil filler cap. To my shock the whole interior of the engine compartment was covered with motor oil. The oil level was down almost a liter. Oil was dripping on my driveway. It was too late to return to the dealer, so I returned the next morning and asked to see the service manager. The asst. manager came out and asked what was the problem. I opened the hood and showed her. I told her I had found the oil fill cap blocking the hood lever and it was obvious that somebody had left it off. She immediately went on the defensive, claiming that I was there for an inspection, not an oil change, and that they had no reason to open the hood, and therefore it was not their fault. Showing her my receipt with the attached "vehicle checklist" showing the "under hood" inspection section with the "oil lever" check as OK, she changed her tune. It was obvious someone opened the hood. I told her that I wanted the engine cleaned, the oil topped off and a new air filter and cabin air filter. She said she would do that as a "courtesy". A courtesy? They were negligent, almost destroyed my engine, and then tried to deny it...and now they are doing me a courtesy? The air cleaner did not need changing as it was sealed in a box. However, the cabin air filter was very dirty, admittingly by my use, but did have a slight smell of burnt oil on it. She refused to replace it, I told her that I was a good customer and for a $20. filter she was making a bad decision. I told her I was going to contact Honda and complain, and she still refused to replace the filter. I have a complaint in with Honda now. I can not recommend this service shop when they have people like that working for them.
