| Summary: If you're looking for a dealership that's honest, transparent, and respects your rights as a consumer--this is not the place. I came to Walter's Mercedes prepared to pay over $30,000 in cash for a vehicle. I made it crystal clear from the beginning that I would not be financing and asked directly if my credit would be checked. Both Alfonso and John "JP" Perez verbally told me it would not be. I trusted their word. Then--without my consent--they ran a hard credit inquiry anyway. This is a clear violation of the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA), which requires a consumer's permission before any hard credit pull is conducted. When I called to follow up, Lee admitted they did it and said it was "to confirm identity." But: * I provided a REAL ID * I submitted multiple forms of identification * I was actively on the phone with my bank in the dealership preparing to wire the full funds or swipe my card To make things worse, they waited until the very end to tell me I couldn't use my card for more than $10K due to internal limits--something they never mentioned up front. I had already confirmed with my bank that I could process the full amount. Now they're claiming it's "policy" to run credit, but: * That policy was never disclosed * I asked if it was posted anywhere, and Lee said no--and then said he "didn't know" or "didn't think so" So which is it? Verbal assurance from multiple employees that no credit check would happen--or a hidden, undocumented "policy" they apply without disclosure or consent? As a young Black woman making a large cash purchase, I can't ignore the possibility that bias played a role in how I was treated. Being spoken over and dismissed when raising valid concerns made it worse. Consumers deserve transparency--not deception. Consent--not coercion. And compliance with federal law--not convenient excuses. Spend your money somewhere that respects all three. |
